IRVINE, California — The Shelby Cruiser bicycle, which gets Carroll Shelby's imprimatur and gives a nod to such vehicles as the 2011 Shelby GT500, will go on sale in late May.
The Shelby Cruiser is the latest in a new crop of auto-themed two-wheelers with zero emissions. Earlier, Mini debuted a bicycle with a Union Jack motif.
But the Shelby Cruiser, which was developed in collaboration with California-based Felt Bicycles, has a beefier look than Mini's offering, with 36-spoke wheels wrapped in "blue dot" tires to resemble automotive racing tires, according to the manufacturer. The bike features the Wimbledon White and Guardsman Blue paint treatment found on such Shelby vehicles as the GT350.
The Shelby Cruiser is priced at $999 — considerably more affordable than the 2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which starts at $49,495.
"Now enthusiasts can take their love of Shelbys to the bike trails, streets and beach boardwalks," said Tracey Smith, vice president of Carroll Shelby Licensing, in a statement on Wednesday.
Carroll Shelby has lent his storied name to everything from toys and electronic games to clothing.

California Bikes This cruiser also has a forward pedaling desigen, meaning the pedals are shifted four inches forward to allow for better leg extension and more open and comfortable seating postiion.
